INT Fellows' Day

The first ‘Isaac Newton Trust Fellows Day’ for early career fellows funded by the Trust in association with Leverhulme Trust, Humboldt Foundation, Max Planck Institute and ESRC was held at the Postdoc Centre, Eddington, on 14 June.

22 Newton Trust Fellows attended, of whom 15 presented their work in an afternoon of ‘3 minutes, 3 slides’ talks. Subjects covered the full range of disciplines and were presented in an engaging fashion at a level suitable for such a broad audience. Among many highlights, Martin Benning taught us how to tell the difference (in mathematical terms) between cats and dogs; Anna-Riikka Kauppinen enlightened us about the symbiotic relationship between church and banks in Ghana; Diarmid Hester put a new spin on garbage; and Duygu Dikicioglu brought the house down with her thoughts on the role of microbial communities in wine making.

The sun shone, the newly-completed Eddington postdoc facilities looked immaculate.

It was the first opportunity for the INT Fellows to meet as a group and they quickly discovered their common ground as a cohort. Many positive connections were made.

It was generally agreed that the day had been a success and hopes were expressed that more events could be organised. We will be asking INT Fellows for their feedback and ideas in due course.

Thank you to everyone who came and took part.
