Research Grant Rounds & Deadlines

The calendar for this years' applications rounds can be found here.

NB All of the Isaac Newton Trust research grant rounds involve a two-step process:

a draft deadline (after which the Director will respond with any  feedback that you might wish to attend to before preparing the final version) and, two weeks later, the final deadline.

a)   Emergency, Project or Equipment Grants

Applications from:

  • individual researchers – to be submitted  by the applicant’s department or equivalent institution: three rounds per annum
  • IRCs - to be channelled via the PVC for Research: one round, in Jan-Feb, per annum

b)  Strategic Research Programmes & Projects

  • There is one round annually, as follows:
  • Draft applications (coversheet, plus one sheet of A4, plus supporting documents) should be submitted by the Trust’s Michaelmas Term deadline.
  • Applications selected in this round will be invited to submit a full application by the Lent Term deadline for a decision in early March
  • Potential applicants whose need to secure funding does not match this timetable should contact the Director.

FAQ - deadlines

What if I miss the draft deadline - can I still submit an application by the final deadline?

Yes, but please contact the Director in advance if this is likely to be the case. We could accept your draft a few days late, providing you accept that any feedback we can offer you (and the opportunity for you to correct/amend your application) may be limited. If you miss the draft stage altogether, then we would accept a final version and would submit it as received to the referees and Trustees, so it must be complete and follow the format we request as closely as possible.

What if I miss the final deadline?

We cannot accept late applications as the time we have for sending them out to referees and Trustees has been pared down to the minimum.

I have an offer of significant external funding and would like to apply for a Strategic Research Programme grant but the offer of external funding has to be secured with matching funding right now and I can't wait till the annual INT application round. Will the Trustees exceptionally consider my application out of the normal timeframe?

Perhaps. The Trustees believe that a gathered field is the best way to judge competing applications for a limited resource, but they also recognise that some opportunities have to be grasped as they arise. Please contact the Director to discuss your situation.
