Leverhume Early Career Fellowships

Application round 2017

Closing dates: the INT's  internal competition deadline is 16 January 2017 Leverhulme's national competition deadline is 02 March 2017

All applicants must secure matched funding from within their institution before applying to the Leverhulme Trust. How is this done?

Matching funding for awards to be held at Cambridge is provided by the Isaac Newton Trust. In order to decide which of the many applicants from the University of Cambridge should be supported in this way, an internal competition is run in which the department that would host the researcher submits its ranked nominations for central decision-making.

NB applicants should check their eligibility for the Leverhulme ECF before applying to the internal competition

Details of the 2017 internal competition for Applicants and Departments   -  note that there will be changes to details of the internal processes for 2017, but the process and timetable for applicants is essentially unchanged.

The essence of the process is as follows:

  • departments/institutes receive applications by their own deadlines, and rank their candidates;
  • departments/institutes make nominations to an internal competition run by INT by 16 January 2017;
  • the top candidates selected by this competition, up to a numerical limit set by the Isaac Newton Trust, will be offered matching funding by the Trust providing they go on to be successful in the national Leverhulme competition;
  • these candidates send their letter from INT provisionally offering  matching funding as evidence of institutional support with their application to the national competition run by the Leverhulme Trust by 02 March 2017

All applicants for Leverhulme Fellowships should apply for support through this special internal competition and not through the Isaac Newton Trust’s normal termly research grant application process or any other INT funding competition.

The Trust does not offer matching funding for Leverhulme Fellowships:

  • retrospectively;
  • nor to candidates whose department/research group has pledged the matching funding at the point of application to Leverhulme;
  • nor can a candidate the Trust has supported in principle but who has not been selected by Leverhulme transfer the INT support to another fellowship.
